‘N’ gauge paint shop: Railfreight Distribution No. 90021

ONE LIVERY not included in the first line-up of the new Graham Farish Class 90 and carried by a number of Class 90s in the 1990s was the international or European version of Railfreight Distribution livery.

It was carried by EWS No. 90021, the subject locomotive for this project, until its March 2007 repainting into First ScotRail colours. Prior to that, No 90021 was found on numerous workings, the most notable of which were the short-term locomotive hauled push-pull services between Edinburgh Waverley and North Berwick with former Virgin Trains Mk.3a and DVT stock, along with use on Anglia main line services.

No. 90021 was first out-shopped in original RfD livery and although it retained a Class 90/0 number, it did undergo some of the changes applied to the Class 90/1 locomotives dedicated to freight traffic. The buffing plates were soon removed and the TDM jumper cables relocated. The original buffers were retained for a while longer, finally being replaced with the now standard flattened oval type from around 1994.
