Will Desplechin ever make another unprecedented masterpiece like his idiosyncratic period drama, ? Maybe not, but the dividends paid by his “Mathieu Amalric plays an addled yet high-octane creative, unable to cope with challenges monumental and mundane alike” mode are more than satisfactory.
