avid Byrne’s only turn at directing a feature film is something you might have happened, but one that’s governed in tone by Byrne’s open-faced, unassuming curiosity, his refusal to draw blood under any circumstances. Here is woven a loose net of idiosyncrasies, a non-local’s idea of local colour, holding in place an album’s worth of Byrne’s inarguably pleasing music – but indirectly, as if to sneak up on any principle of organising. Set in the fictional town of Virgil, Texas, on the occasion of the state sesquicentennial, has a plot only insofar as it returns more than once to a few recurring characters.
