As always, it is good to start with a definition. Broadly speaking, insurance is an arrangement by which someone undertakes to provide a guarantee of compensation for a specified loss in return for the payment of a specified premium. More prosaically, it is an arrangement in which you pay money to a company and they pay money to you if something unpleasant happens. Believe what the health and safety brigade puts out and working in the countryside, and particularly shooting, appears to be so fraught with potential unpleasantness, such that if we really thought about it, we probably wouldn’t leave home of a morning. But that is the risk we run for the rewards we seek.
