The original plan for this column was to deliver a decent dog. Not a field trial champion, certainly, but a good, solid working dog that would retrieve game, sit and stay and not embarrass us in public. At least no more than we embarrass ourselves.

And to have a bit of fun along the way. There would be some training tips and so forth
