Native Americans have used echinacea ( Echinacea purpurea ) for hundreds of years to treat infections and wounds, and as a general cure-all. It contains polysaccharides that boost the immune system, relieve pain, reduce inflammation and have antiviral, hormonal and antioxidant properties.
