And Off To Work We Go

Valid enough questions indeed, but what’s really interesting is to discover that it was revolutions that first determined the greatest impact on working environments.

The first revolution actually wasn’t considered one at the time. It was more than 12 000 years ago, when some humans had realised the value of growing crops themselves, rather than wandering the savannahs hoping to harvest enough in the wild.

Farming, then, is arguably our first work environment. It didn’t matter if you wanted to go into the fields or not, but if you didn’t you were unlikely to get a good harvest. Even today, the most dedicated farmers, and anyone else considered successful, could be called outstanding in their field.

Puns aside, the evolution in work environments continued slowly until something that could be described as a revolution came along in the late 1700s. It was the Industrial Revolution and it shifted people at an unprecedented rate from rural to urban areas, and from small-scale work
