Dusk creeps in. At the tennis club the players are coming off the courts, and soon competitiveness gives way to camaraderie over sundowners while dogs gambol on the lawn. The distant roar of the ocean forms a rhythmic counterpoint to an avian serenade from the nearby forest, where bushbuck, duiker and other wild creatures find refuge. ”I“ve lived here for 24 years,” club member Luise Mohr tells me, as we sip our drinks in the lowering light. Originally from Germany, Luise and her husband arrived in the village soon after they were married. ”I“ll never go back to Germany. Southbroom is special.” Luise is not the first to say so.
