A GREEN & PLEASANT LAND
A decision about where to go for our summer holiday involves the whole family. Eventually, it was agreed that we would follow the same route through Holland, Germany and Austria as last year, but this time, we’d venture into uncharted territory, in Slovenia – known as the ‘greenest, most environmentally sound country’.
With the previous few weeks focused on Ben completing his SATs and bidding farewell to junior school, packing was very last minute. It was one of our better ideas to book all of the campsites in advance, because now it was just a case of ensuring that we caught the ferry from Harwich to the Hook of Holland.
The crossing was seamless, with our dog Lucy now more familiar with the routine of sleeping during the overnight ferry.
Ready for adventure, we disembarked, hoping that the uninterrupted English heatwave would follow us!
Sunshine on the Rhine
Aware that our Cologne stopover, Camping Berger, closed for lunch, we drove from Holland, ensuring that we arrived after 2pm.
With the temperature still a balmy 30C, Harvey and I settled on a picnic blanket with a G&T, while Ben took charge of the barbecue and we all enjoyed watching the brightly lit boats on the Rhine.
Heavy traffic the next day enforced an overnight stop at Campingplatz Tauberromantik. We had used this site before and were familiar with the off-road walk from the site to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a beautiful medieval town and one of the highlights of the Romantic Road.
