In October 1726 newspapers began to circulate the story of Mary Toft. She was a presents an unflinching account of the hoax and its wider historical context. Mary earned a penny a day undertaking agricultural labour. In contrast, the Duchess of Richmond was able to spend 12 shillings on a coat for a pet monkey. During the course of the hoax, Mary’s lack of autonomy is contrasted with the ability of others to exert control over her.
