OCTOBER GLORY IS BORN IN JUNE

Even after the 2019 season began, the biggest stories were happening off the field. A spate of contract extensions, after a very soft free agent market, dominated the headlines.

Chris Sale and Jacob deGrom agreed to stay in Boston and New York. Matt Carpenter worked out a deal with the Cardinals to stay off the market. Earlier in the spring, superstars Mike Trout, Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt signed extensions for more than a combined $800 million. The 2019-20 and 2020-21 free agent markets were weakened considerably by these agreements.
