My favourite plant and why

Swamp lily

All flowers are favourites with me, but of them all I think pride of place must be awarded to the swamp lily (Crinum x powellii). This deliciously scented rose-tinted lily, with glorious umbels of blooms sometimes 3ft [90cm] in height, standing well above the stately palm-like foliage, is quite an easy subject for anyone who has a cool greenhouse. It really requires very little attention, beyond keeping well supplied with water from March to September. I find it succeeds well when the bulbs are potted in a mixture of four parts turfy loam and one part each of peat and sand, well mixed, then leave the plants until quite pot-bound.
