Dove Shells

Dove shells are world travellers, common in the tropics and more temperate parts of the Australian coast. They’re also travellers on the eating front: Columbellidae, the family of snails who live in the shell, crawl on the hard undersides of rocks and even on seagrass beds, and like other molluscs, they eat both plant and animal matter, which is rare in the snail world. Dove shells vary wildly in shape—from short and stubby to long and delicate, smooth, knobby and multicoloured. On the Hawaiian island of Ni’ihau, you might find local, colourful dove shells strung into leis. They’re also popular on the second-hand market: hermit crabs are quite fond of a dove shell.
