Mass-produced cars of any era from any country were made just good enough. Not exquisitely, not painstakingly, but good enough. They were designed to last for years, be reasonably dependable, and look decent, but they were also built to sell for a price. This was made abundantly clear to me during my stint on the Ford assembly line years ago.
