THE YEAR OF #METOO AND THE STORY YOU DIDN’T HEAR
This year, the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements permeated all our lives. From the Women’s March to the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation hearings, discussions about sexual assault, consent, and harassment reached the highest office in the United States. Previously accused of such behavior himself, it was little surprise that President Trump failed to launch initiatives to protect Americans from sexual assault or misconduct.
Despite the ramifications survivors face for coming forward (public embarrassment, hate mail, death threats) they continue to rise and confront their abusers. Meanwhile The Advocate has been in the thick of things, reporting on stories that impact the LGBTQ community in particular.
Queer activists have been some of the leading voices in this movement, particularly Rose McGowen (with support from partner Rain Dove). Like McGowen, out bisexual actresses Angelina Jolie to provide resources for survivors and advocates. Over 70 women have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct and one criminal trial moves forward.
