MW WINES

(JULY 2018 AUCTION REPORT, by ANTHONY CAPUTI)

THE secondary market continues to go from strength to strength at MW Wines, with strong results emanating due to great wines from great producers continually being offered by vendors. Buyer activity is almost at an all-time high, evidenced by clearance rates consistently soaring north of 70 per cent and final hammer prices regularly exceeding estimates. The results in the July auction were indicative of our auctions throughout this year. The clearance rate exceeded 71 per cent, with over $494,000 of wine changing hands.

Wines from the Penfolds stable often dominate our auctions and this was the case again in July. An astonishing 706 lots were offered across the range, with a 94 per cent clearance rate and some excellent results achieved. Bin 389, or “Baby Grange” as it was once referred to, was significantly represented and results were strong: the 1996 achieved a hammer price of $92, $97 for the ’98, $87 for the ’99, $97 for both the 2006 and 2008 vintages, while the 2002, 2004 and 2005 vintages all had hammer prices of $92. Results for Bin 407 were similarly impressive,
