MW WINES

(MAY AND JUNE 2018 AUCTION REPORT, by ANTHONY CAPUTI)

The final two auctions of the financial year continued the strong upwards trend for MW Wines in 2018. There is strong buyer sentiment in the secondary market, with a focus on purchasing fine wines from top producers in good to excellent vintages. Clearance rates for both auctions surged well above 70 per cent - 74 per cent for May with over $478,000 of wine changing hands and for June, a 72 per cent clearance rate with more than $390,000 in sales.

We’ve often noted how Penfolds Grange and Bin 707 lead the highlights package in our auctions, and they’ve now been joined by others in the stable - Bin 389 and Bin 407.

An astonishing 110 lots of Bin 389 over the two auctions were offered, with a 100 per cent clearance rate and some excellent results achieved. Of the vintages in the 1990s, strong final hammer prices of $109 for the 1994 vintage, $120 for the ’96 and ’98 vintages, and $82 for the 1997 were achieved. Vintages in the 2000s also performed admirably, with the 2000 vintage reaching a record $115. In other results $92 was achieved for 2001, $115 for the 2008 vintage and another record price of $155 for the 2006 vintage.

Results for Bin 407 were similarly impressive, with hammer prices of $82, $87, $75, $97 and $71 for the 1995, ’96,’97, ’98 and 2001 vintages respectively. Following on from

IT WAS May 1978 when, with an 80c cover price, the first Winestate magazine hit the news stands. It doesn’t seem all that long ago really, but maybe that’s because I’m a person of a certain age! But it was after reading an interview with Penfolds’ fa
