Designer Jonathan Simkhai’s constant supply of close female friends are an ongoing source of inspiration for him. When we meet the 2015 winner of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award at an apartment at Ham Yard Hotel, where he is staying in central London, he tells us, “I like to think about the women in my life: what they’re going through, where they’re going and how they’d wear something – it gets my [creative] juices flowing”.

Greeting us at the door, the American designer is wearing a black T-shirt and navy trousers. His beard is closely cropped, his short dark hair just so – he is also very softly spoken and incredibly smiley.
