As a self-confessed workaholic, fashion designer Eudon Choi seeks to escape through his collections. His metaphorical wanderlust has taken him to Bhutan, a Buddhist kingdom on the eastern edge of the Himalayas, sun-soaked southern Italy, the fancy ski resort of Gstaad in the Swiss Alps – and for SS22, the carnival capital, Rio de Janeiro.
“When we created this collection, it was about the desire to go away. The mood was very much a party vibe, because it felt like we were ending the pandemic,” he tells us from his studio in Haggerston, east London.
Having previously visited Latin America, when he was inspired by Cuban-American performance artist Ana Mendieta for his resort collection, the current vibrant offering probes a similar theme. “We wanted to explore more of Latin America and looked at the gorgeous 1959 movie Black Orpheus, which is based in Rio de Janeiro with the carnival set in the background.
