FLUID CONFUSION
Q: Love the magazine and your helpful direction. My question involves what transmission fluid to use in my 1973 Dodge Challenger transmission (727 automatic) and my 1985 Dodge Daytona transmission (also an automatic).
Dexron has been used, as recommended by Chrysler, but the current fluids on offer are many and none are listed as Dexron alone. I did see a fluid called DEX/MERC in the store. I would love to know what you and your experts would suggest we use in our older Chrysler cars.

A: Thank you for the kind words about HMM and my work.
One of the problems with running older machinery is the superseding of parts, fluids, and so on. It is just a fact of business that a company cannot keep making transmission fluid or something else for a 46-year-old vehicle.
Though many Mopar guys are using Type F, which was originally a Ford fluid, with good results, you may want to do some homework on your own.
