Q:I have a 1980 Firebird Formula with the 301 V-8 engine and I want to add a Positraction or some other sort of limited-slip rear end. What rears are interchangeable that I could locate at my local salvage yard and that could be bolted in by an owner with minimal mechanical expertise?

A: For a direct fit assembly that has the same wheel-to-wheel width and suspension mounting points, look for one of these donors:

• 1970-’81 Camaro and Firebird with 10-bolt cover and drum brakes.

• 1970 Camaro and Firebird with a 12-bolt cover and drum brakes.

• 1979-’81 Firebird with a 10-bolt cover with rear disc brakes (Camaro didn’t offer the option).

Next, check the axle code, which should be on the front face of the axle a few inches from the center carrier. The number should be 8 digits long. The first two digits give you the ratio, the second is plant location where it
