TH200-4R VS TH700-R4
Q: I have 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air, two-door post with the original 235-cu.in. six-cylinder and two- speed Powerglide. The Powerglide lost reverse and is leaking transmission fluid. I’ve been to three transmission shops and have been told three different solutions for my problem. I have also just reviewed your article, which originally appeared in the January 2011 issue of Hemmings Motor News.IhavebeentoldI can use either a TH700-R4 or a TH200-4R four-speed automatic in its place. Which one will swap the best and why? What else do I need to know?

A: Your first obstacle will be the fact that you have a six-cylinder engine with the cast-iron Powerglide. No other automatic transmission will bolt up to your block without using a bellhousing adapter for 235/261 car and truck engines. Several are available: Langdon’s Stovebolt Engines offers one (#56-3001) with a necessary flexplate, but you need to upgrade to a newer starter as well.
