At some point during your boat-owning life you might face a situation where you need to move a boat over a long distance – either by land or by water. There are three main factors to consider in such a situation: size of the boat, the distance or destination and the cost involved.

There are many things to consider. If you are doing the move all by yourself, you’ll need to do a lot of paperwork. As well as preparing the boat for the move, there are various laws to be aware of, such as import/export procedures (if moving your boat to another country) and insurance.

If you’re going to hire a professional company, you’ll still need to collect a lot of documents, but you should also do your due diligence when selecting the freight company or yacht or shipping broker who’ll arrange the transport. Check their reputation, ask for quotes, and search for reviews and comments on the Internet to get an idea of how reliable they are.

My friend took the more unusual approach of packing and shipping his boat himself from our yacht club in Montreal to his new sailing ground in Croatia. I helped him with this and learned some interesting lessons along the way.
