Water has always been sacred to the indigenous people of the United States. In fact, the Lakota phrase Mní wičhóni means “water is life.”
The Lakota, one of North America’s original Native American tribes, are part of the Great Sioux Nation. About 8,000 members of the Nation live within the Standing Rock Reservation. The reservation is on land that stretches from North Dakota into South Dakota.
