Dramatic scenes unfolded at the U.S. Embassy in Iraq on Tuesday. Iraqi militiamen and their supporters stormed into a perimeter gatehouse, then set fires, threw stones and chanted "Death to America!"

They did not break through to the main part of the sprawling embassy complex, but they continue to camp outside its walls.

This is the latest sign of renewed turmoil in Iraq, and it spotlights the U.S. role in the country under the Trump administration. There are hundreds of staff in the embassy and 5,000 U.S. troops in the country, plus an unknown number of contractors.
