The OEC Blackburne conrod story

As many of you will know, my 1924 OEC Blackburne (‘Oek’ as it’s known) has been in my custody since I bought her (sorry, it’s non-PC these days, but Oek is a ‘she,’ as my wife Elaine describes her as the ‘other woman’…) in 1971, as an incomplete wreck, for £45. Some of you also know recently we’ve returned her original engine to the rolling chassis and had a new exhaust system fabricated.

For almost 40 years, Oek was installed with a standard, 500cc Blackburne side-valve unit, rather than the correct 550cc engine. This was fitted by a previous owner at the start of their aborted restoration. These engines are not only considerably less powerful than the 550cc unit, but have a
