SVR footplate course mirrored Heritage Railway’s experience

INSPIRED by Gareth Evans’report in issue 255, my sisters kindly bought me a ‘taster’footplate experience on the Severn Valley Railway as a 70th birthday cum Christmas present.

We are from a railway family (East Coast Main Line and Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway).

I opted to leave it until the summer for reasonable weather. I happened to pick what turned out to be the hottest on record – my timing is always suspect!

As one would expect with the short wheelbase/outside cylinder combination, the locomotive, GWR 0-6-0PT No. 1501, was rough riding, but I could feel the power it could exert.

The experience was beautifully organised. Just as Gareth described in his article, it was all very friendly and relaxed. Having gone there with some trepidation, I was amazed how well it went – it seemed to be all over in 10 minutes!
