CIE Ballast Plough Van
ONLY five ballast plough vans were built to the design represented by the brand-new model by Irish Railway Models (IRM), numbered 24850-54. Constructed at the Córas Iompair Éireann (CIE) Inchicore works in 1978, the vans replaced ageing engineers’ vehicles and were designed to be run at either end of a rake of ballast wagons to assist with the distribution of ballast at work sites.
The plough could be raised and lowered using a mechanism located within the cabin of the van. Two axle ballast hoppers would discharge their loads on to the track and the plough lowered to spread the ballast over the track for PW workers to finish off with rakes and shovels. The plough has two curved sections in it to clear the rails
