    Accelerations in the Western Region summer timetable followed on from Paddington-Plymouth/ Penzance services no longer conveying portions for Torbay, which would instead have its own independent through-trains four times a day in each direction. The move allowed an hourly pattern of departures between Paddington and Exeter, with accelerations of up to 20 minutes between London and Plymouth and up to 65 minutes to Penzance. The down ‘Cornish Riviera Express’ was timetabled to cover the 225.75 miles from Paddington to Plymouth in 3hr 30min with one stop at Exeter,
