Following the failure of the 21.30 Euston-Inverness at Harthope Viaduct, between Beattock station and the summit (Dumfries and Galloway) early on May 18, the following 22.15 Euston-Glasgow was stopped at Greskine and the driver William Brown of Polmadie asked to bank the stranded train towards the top of the gradient. As the two trains were going uphill together, the 21.30 apparently drew ahead and then developed wheel slip. As a result, the trains collided near Harthope and driver
