‘OO’ NBL D600 ‘Warship’ class
ONLY five D600-series Class 41 locomotives (D600-604) ‘Warship Class’ were built by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow and they were the result of a British Transport Commission (BTC) sponsored order for a pilot scheme diesel hydraulic locomotive with around 2000hp output to match that of similar diesel electric locomotives of the time.
All of the references to the D600 locomotives found by your reviewer hints at there being some dispute between the Western Region and the BTC, the latter insisting on a heavy body and frame in the same manner as many 1Co-Co-1 locomotives introduced at the time, while the former preferred lightweight construction for its diesel hydraulics that saw advantages in lower track wear and fuel consumption.
