Making Sense Of The Smollett Legal Drama: What's Going On Here?

Fair warning: There are questions we just can't answer at this point. But there are also plenty we can. Here's an attempt to explain the charges against the Empire actor — and the move to drop them.

It's OK if you're confused.

Many people — including Chicago's highest authorities — appeared flustered as well on Tuesday, when prosecutors abruptly announced that they were dropping all charges against Jussie Smollett. The Empire actor had been indicted on 16 counts for filing a false police report ... until, in a reversal that appeared to take even the police and mayor by surprise, the Cook County state's attorney's office said it would not pursue them.

Now, as the dust settles, you may have some questions. Well, here are some answers — as well as some notes on what we don't have answers to at the moment. Here's a timeline of major dates in the case, by the way, in case you're fuzzy on those, too.
