Behind the scenes of docuseries 'America to Me,' about racial inequity at Chicago area high school
While promoting his documentary about Roger Ebert in 2014, "Hoop Dreams" director Steve James casually mentioned to a local newspaper that he was interested in making a film about race in his hometown of Oak Park, Ill.
Now four years after that off-the-cuff remark, "America to Me" is set for a small-screen debut at 9 p.m. Sunday. The Starz network docuseries examines racial inequity at Oak Park and River Forest High School with a focus on 12 students and various teachers and staff members who agreed to be trailed by cameras during the 2015-16 academic year.
The project explores how some students of color struggle to find success at the elite high school compared to their white counterparts - an issue that has long been discussed in the socially progressive community of Oak Park and will soon get a national platform. Buzz for the 10-part series has
