Tension between the United States and Pakistan seemed headed toward the breaking point in recent weeks after President Donald Trump angrily accused the South Asian nation of not stamping out anti-American militants there or helping the U.S. in its war in neighboring Afghanistan - charges an irked Islamabad rejected.
On Jan. 1, Trump said on Twitter that the United States had "foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools." The president accused Pakistan of providing a "safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan," while providing "little help."
