JOHANNESBURG_Zimbabwe's military took over state television early Wednesday, announcing it had intervened to end a political crisis, after explosions and gunfire were heard in the capital, Harare.
The military said in a statement that President Robert Mugabe remained president and commander in chief of the armed forces but that "criminals" around him would be prosecuted.
"Comrade R.G. Mugabe and his family are safe and sound, and their security is guaranteed," said the statement read on-air by a military officer. "We are only targeting criminals around him
