About this series
In 1818, Jeannette Power, a young French woman moved to Sicily and fell in love with the Mediterranean Sea and the Argonauta Argo octopus, the weirdest octopus on Earth.
Amazing weird fact: The Argonaut octopus creates a delicate shell for itself which it uses to travel up and down in the water and as a safe place to raise its young.
At the time, though, the only way to study a marine animal was if it was dead on land. That wasn't good enough. Jeannette wanted to study this creature alive. She had many questions: did it create its own shell, how did it reproduce, what did it eat, and did it know she was watching? She knew that careful observation was the only way to answer her questions.
Follow French scientist Jeannette Power on her quest for answers about one of the most mysterious marine animals on Earth.

- Burn: Michael Faraday's Candle: MOMENTS IN SCIENCE, #1
1
Ages 7-12 WHAT MAKES A CANDLE BURN? Solid wax is somehow changed into light and heat. But how? Travel back in time to December 28, 1848 in London, England to one of the most famous juvenile science Christmas lectures at the Royal Institution. British scientist Michael Faraday (1791-1867) encouraged kids to carefully observe a candle and to try to figure out how it burned. Known as one of the best science experimenters ever, Faraday's passion was always to answer the basic questions of science: "What is the cause? Why does it occur?" Since Faraday's lecture, "The Chemical History of a Candle," was published in 1861, it's never been out of print. Oddly, till now, it's never been published as a children's picture book. Faraday originally gave seven lectures on how a candle burns. Pattison has adapted the first 6000-word lecture to about 650 words for modern elementary students. AUTHOR: Darcy Pattison Pattison is the author of Abayomi, the Brazilian Puma: The True Story of an Orphaned Cub, which was named a 2015 National Science Teacher's Association Outstanding Science Trade Book. Desert Baths was named a 2013 NSTA Outstanding Science Trade Book. ILLUSTRATOR: Peter Willis With over 20 years experience in illustration and design, illustrator Peter Willis continues to be as enthusiastic and passionate about his work as ever. His illustrations have palpable character, bringing them to life through his craft and quirky approach. He lives in North East England with his wife and daughter. This is his debut picture book. Peter Willis brings humor to the story, but he also manages to convey accurate information about matter and its physical properties.
- Clang! Ernst Chladni's Sound Experiments: MOMENTS IN SCIENCE, #2
2
Ages 7-12 2019 NSTA Outstanding Science Trade Book SLJ Review: "engaging narrative…enjoyable read…." NSTA: "A sound representation of sound! Takes the, sometimes hard to grasp, concept of sound and sound waves and makes it fun to learn." MIDWEST BOOK REVIEWS: "…CLANG is both witty, factual, and charmingly illustrated with humorous colored illustrations." Elementary Science – Sound and Sound Waves What if your science experiments were so interesting that even an Emperor wanted to know more? In 1806, scientist Ernst Chladni (KLOD-nee) left Germany for a three-year road trip, entertaining Europeans with his science. He made wires, columns of air, and solids vibrate. He wrote about this in his native German language, but his French scientist friends wanted to read about it in French. How could he get the cash he needed to write his new book? In February 1809, Chladni's friends took him to the Tuliere Palace. This elementary science picture book dramatizes the exciting meeting between a German scientist and French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. Like Bill Nye, the Science Guy today, Chladni popularized science. But during his work as an entertainer, he struggled to find the time and finances do actual research. This story provides a glimpse at the life of Ernst Chladni, the Father of Acoustics. It's an amazing example of how scientists collaborate internationally. The story is based on Chladni's own description of the event.
- POLLEN: Darwin's 130 Year Prediction: MOMENTS IN SCIENCE, #3
3
Junior Library Guild Selection Kirkus Review - *Starred* review "…captures the sense of wonder that comes from discovery…" SLJ Review PW Review –"… a gratifying narrative arc while presenting an important truth about science…an inviting story." Eureka! NonFiction Book Award Honor – California Reading Association 2020 NSTA Outstanding Science Trade Book Ages 7-12 Elementary Science – POLLEN How long does it take for science to find an answer to a problem? On January 25, 1862, naturalist Charles Darwin received a box of orchids. One flower, the Madagascar star orchid, fascinated him. It had an 11.5" nectary, the place where flowers make nectar, the sweet liquid that insects and birds eat. How, he wondered, did insects pollinate the orchid? It took 130 years to find the answer. After experiments, he made a prediction. There must be a giant moth with a 11.5" proboscis, a straw-like tongue. Darwin died without ever seeing the moth, which was catalogued by entomologists in in 1903. But still no one had actually observed the moth pollinating the orchid. In 1992, German entomologist, Lutz Thilo Wasserthal, Ph.D. traveled to Madagascar. By then, the moths were rare. He managed to capture two moths and released them in a cage with the orchid. He captured the first photo of the moth pollinating the flower, as Darwin had predicted 130 years before. Backmatter includes information on the moth, the orchid, Charles Darwin, Lutz Wasserthal. Also included is Wasserthal's original photo taken in 1992.
- Eclipse: How the 1919 Solar Eclipse Proved Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity: MOMENTS IN SCIENCE, #4
4
"The text of the book is wonderfully clear and easy to follow, and the illustrations are great, both lively and informative. The story of the eclipse unfolds dramatically, and the science is explained vividly and correctly." Daniel John Kennefick, Astrophysicist and Science Historian "… Pattison takes a complicated scientific theory and makes it not just fairly understandable, but entertaining as well." Kirkus Reviews Ages 7-12 ELEMENTARY SCIENCE - SOLAR SYSTEM How do you prove an impossible idea? With courage, perseverance, and a lot of luck! In 1915, British astronomer Arthur Stanley Eddington was fascinated with Einstein's new theory of general relativity. The theory talks about how forces push and pull objects in space. Einstein said that the sun's gravity could pull and bend light. It seemed like a crazy idea. Could his theory be proven? To test this, astronomers decided to photograph a solar eclipse. The eclipse would allow them to photograph the stars before and during the solar eclipse. If the star's position moved, then it was evidence that that light had bent. Eddington and his team traveled from England to the island of Principe, just off the African coast, to photograph the eclipse. In simple language, this nonfiction illustrated picture book explains how the push (acceleration) and pull (gravity) of space affects light. Back matter includes information on Einstein, Eddington, and the original photograph of the 1919 solar eclipse.
- Erosion: How Hugh Bennett Saved America’s Soil and Ended the Dust Bowl: MOMENTS IN SCIENCE, #5
5
"A compelling, kid-friendly, and visually appealing erosion story." – Kirkus review 2021 Notable Social Studies Trade Book list Ages 7-12 ELEMENTARY SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES - Soil Erosion and the Dust Bowl When the dust storms of the 1930s threatened to destroy U.S. farming and agriculture, Hugh Bennett knew what to do. For decades, he had studied the soils in every state, creating maps showing soil composition nationwide. He knew what should be grown in each area, and how to manage the land to conserve the soil. He knew what to do for weathering and erosion. To do that, he needed the government's help. But how do you convince politicians that the soil needs help? Hugh Bennett knew what to do. He waited for the wind. This is the exciting story of a soil scientist confronting politicians to encourage them to pass a law to protect the land, the soil. When the U.S. Congress passed a law establishing the Soil Conservation Service, it was the first government agency in the world dedicated to protecting the land, to protecting the Earth. Read this amazing story of an unchronicled early environmentalist, Hugh Bennett, the founder of the NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Service).
