About this series

Treasure Island is the ultimate pirate adventure story, replete with treasure and an unforgettable cast, including Jim Hawkins, the boy at the centre of the action; Billy Bones, the pirate with the all important treasure map; Captain Alexander Smollet, the stubborn yet loyal captain of the Hispaniola; Israel Hands, ship's coxswain who tries to kill Jim Hawkins but ends up in Davy Jones' Locker; Ben Gunn, a half-insane and marooned ex-pirate; Pew, a blind ex-pirate who dies when trampled by horses; and, of course, Long John Silver, the famous amputee who was formerly Flint's quartermaster but later becomes the leader of Hispaniola's mutineers. Join this cast for a fantastic adventure and treasure hunt, but watch out for the "Black Spot"-a card with a circular black spot in the middle given to an accused. It means the pirate will be overturned as leader, by force if necessary-or else killed outright. Not impressed? You should be-after all, just being tipped with the Black Spot scared poor Billy Bones to death.

Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novella paints a dark and complex tale about the duality of man’s nature. The story explores this contrast of human character through the strange case of Dr. Jekyll. A kind scientist by day, Jekyll discovers a way to transform into the form of Mr. Hyde by night. With a personality who carries all the hidden evil traits Jekyll disdains, Mr. Hyde becomes more difficult to control just as he perpetrates darker and more vicious deeds. Anticipating modern psychology, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a brilliant original study of man’s dual nature—as well as an immortal tale of suspense and terror. The book was an immediate success and remains one of Stevenson’s best-selling works.

Author

Robert Louis Stevenson

Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh in 1850, the only son of an engineer, Thomas Stevenson. Despite a lifetime of poor health, Stevenson was a keen traveller, and his first book An Inland Voyage (1878) recounted a canoe tour of France and Belgium. In 1880, he married an American divorcee, Fanny Osbourne, and there followed Stevenson's most productive period, in which he wrote, amongst other books, Treasure Island (1883), The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and Kidnapped (both 1886). In 1888, Stevenson left Britain in search of a more salubrious climate, settling in Samoa, where he died in 1894.
