About this series

The phoenix sovereign of Westhold might not want Sam for anything more than their hunter skills, but that won't stop the sabertoothed hunter from defending their unclaimed mate—and the stupid utopian city of equality that Theo insists on building.

Things heat up in the last installment of the Not Quite series…and someone might just get burned.

Author's Note:

I love reverse harem, but I got sick of reading the same old tropes. In my books you will find atypical characters and varied sexuality. In general, you probably won't find many alpha males or fainting females, and relationships may have a more poly feel.

The Not Quite series is a harem/reverse harem urban fantasy series of novellas (between 35,000-45,000 words) and contains the following:

*adult language, and lots of it

*moderate levels of violence/gore/action

*graphic sexual situations

*polyamory/ multiple lovers

*LBGTQ and straight themes (the main character is intersex and will have both male and female lovers, and this is a harem, so expect M/F, M/M, F/F, MMMFF etc.)

*as usual, my characters all have their own emotional scars. This means the books MAY contain mentions of abuse, unpleasant situations, etc. Please do not read if you are triggered by things like this. This book in particular includes references to past abuse or mistreatment, physical, mental, and sexual.

*occasional "cliff-hangers" or lead-ins to the next book may occur, though generally at least one major plot arc shows completion or at the very least, forward progress.

*word count does not include teaser chapters or other fluff material at the end.

At twenty-eight years old, Sam thought they were old enough to stop making terrible decisions. But taking a merc job for a human millionaire can't be described as anything else. Neither can drinking so much fairy moonshine that you forget there are good reasons not to let yourself think with your…parts.   Hunting people is a whole different world than hunting supernatural beasts, and Sam and their guild might not come out on the winning side of this one. When the goons Sam is hired to track down fight back with magic, it rapidly becomes apparent that Theo isn't telling the whole story about why people want him dead. Sam loses Fin and Emerson, and it takes drastic measures to get them back, including working with a bunch of assholes Sam knows better than to trust.   And why the hell do Sam's most inconvenient shifter impulses choose now to kick in? Sometimes a half-human, half-monster, half-male, half-female fiend hunter just can't catch a break….   Author's Note: I love reverse harem, but I got sick of reading the same old tropes. Not quite human, not quite beast. Not quite female, not quite male. Sometimes hunter, sometimes prey. Always alone. Until them.   Fiend hunter Sam "Sabertooth" Forest is used to being on the outskirts. A cur with a mix of shifter and human blood, Sam can't fully shift to beast but can't fully pass as human. Through sheer determination, and a desire to protect the broken shifter woman who raised them, Sam has managed to eek out a place of their own in a world devastated by the rift that allowed monsters to spill into the Earth plane. Sam hunts monsters--sometimes curs and mongrels just like Sam. The work might be dangerous, and the humans might want to put the mixed breed hunter on their hitlist, but it's a job. It's freedom. Sam works alone and trusts no one.   The next hunt should bring in a big bounty—big enough to pay the pack extortion fee and keep Sam's adoptive mother safe through winter. But when a Leprechaun horns in on Sam's unicorn hunt and tricks Sam into forming a hunter's guild, Sam is suddenly burdened by an overabundance of people. Setting off to hunt one-horned murder beasts with an annoying leprechaun and a nerdy half-ogre is bad enough. But when you add in a betrayal by the seductive siren Sam has loved since childhood, and the machinations of a rich human politician, well…Sam's simple, lonely little life just got a whole lot more complicated.   Author's Note: I love reverse harem, but I got sick of reading the same old tropes. What's more fun than dragging a politician, an ogre, a leprechaun, and a hired killer across the wastelands to retrieve a human passenger? Anything. Anything would be more enjoyable than this—even hunting hungry fiends.   Sam is questioning their life choices. Maybe it would just be easier to murder the idiots and leave the bodies in the wastelands. But, growl as Sam might, everyone knows the hunter will do the right thing. And helping the idealistic human sovereign move his family member and closest advisor from Golding to Westhold is the right thing to do. Too bad the raiders, hyena beasts, and giant death worms don't seem to think so….   Tension grows, emotions run high, and heads roll…uh, literally…as Sam takes one more step away from their solitary life and toward actually caring about people—or terrifying monsters, whatever.   Author's Note: I love reverse harem, but I got sick of reading the same old tropes. When life seems to good to be true, it usually is. That's a lesson that monster hunter Sam Forrest learned early and has had beaten into them often. So, when their relationship with two amazing guys and the luxury of a big paycheck from their last job seems too good to be true….   Tensions in Westhold are rising with the ascension of a new leader who has some radical ideas about what the relationship between humans, curs, and fiends should look like. Sam soon finds themselves swept up in the upheaval that comes with changing the status quo. Just when Sam finally lets their guard down, they end up reeling from the loss of someone close to them, which throws them into a battle with the wild instincts of their shifter side. Hunters like Sam are often hired to kill curs who go feral under stress. This time, it might be Sam who ends up as the prey.   Author's Note: I love reverse harem, but I got sick of reading the same old tropes. Viceroy. It's not a term Sam would have ever thought would apply to them. But for some reason, the sovereign of Westhold seems to trust Sam with his life—and with the legacy the crazy, not-so-human firebird is building. But none of that matters if Sam can't conquer their fear and insecurities and keep from going feral. Fin and Emerson just won't give up on Sam and stay away from the cur, where they'll be safe. And when Sam is forced to confront the alpha and the shifter pack who has tormented Sam since birth, all Sam's worst fears come true as the hunter faces the risk of losing a mate they were never brave enough to claim.   Author's Note: I love reverse harem, but I got sick of reading the same old tropes. Sometimes our greatest strengths come from our deepest challenges. I write magic and romance, starring a cast of creatures with feathers, fins, and teeth. My books include paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and fantasy romance--with the occasional steampunk or alien story thrown in just for kicks. My pan heart firmly believes love is love, so you'll see straight, LGBTQIA, monogamous, reverse harem, and poly relationships in my work. My favorite theme is overcoming our inner demons and the insecurities that hold us back. I also advocate for self-development and mental health and dabble in non-fiction as time allows. I love the outdoors and still hope to be abducted by fae! (I may have more in common with my characters than I care to admit.) You can help Kaye create at patreon.com/KayeDraper.
