About this series

Tracey is an honor student, a teacher's pet, and the only black grandchild of the mulatto Kauffman Family. After generations of carefully-chosen mates, the Kauffmans have diluted just about every trace of Africa out of them---until Tracey's doting father went against his mother's wishes and married a smart, ambitious girl with beautiful ebony skin and features that call to a black man like West-African djembe drums.

Tracey takes after her mother, at least when it comes to skin tone and features. But being the dark-complexioned, black grandchild of the Kauffmans has left her feeling isolated...and scarred. Every day she silently carries those scars through the halls of John L. LeFlore. But she's learning to compensate for her abundance of melanin with her abundance of body.

On top of her esteem issues, Tracey is dealing with the real possibility of her parents divorcing and her doting father moving out. When she meets a fair-skinned friend of her fairer-skinned cousins, he takes full advantage of her vulnerable naivete and turns Tracey's life upside down. She's fourteen but now she has grown-woman problems, the kind she can't study her way out of.

Young Andre Mitchell is a gifted football player who is adept at dodging tackles and dodging trouble. In junior high he was a star. But now---in high school---Dre must not only make the grade in the classroom, he must hold his own on the field and in the streets. At John L. LeFlore, Dre is a small fish in a pond full of piranhas. He's uncertain if new love interests can be trusted or if old puppy love can mature. All of this becomes even more complicated when a run-in with local thugs leads to his arrest and questioning by police. Dre's caught up in a whirlwind. Life is happening too fast, outpacing his experience. But in Toulminville, Dre's hood, you grow up quickly....Or you don't grow up. A LeFlore High Short Story, Vol. 1

Mia's tough. A fighter. She's been fighting her entire life. When she was a child, she fought her older sister---Debra. Later she fought Joyce, her mama. Now, most days, she has to fight the feelings of self-loathing and doubt that accompany her through the halls of John L. LeFlore. A year ago, at Phillips Prep, Mia was part of the "in crowd," mostly because she had been friends with Chandra Thomas since elementary. But things are changing, and Mia is slowly falling out of Chandra's good graces. But high school is the least of her problems. The fights at home---and in her mind---are becoming more vicious. More frequent. More predatory. Mia's tough. But does she have one more fight in her? A LeFlore High Short Story, Vol. 2
