About this series

Mari's Hope delivers the dramatic conclusion to the middle-grade trilogy begun with Odin's Promise, awarded the 2014 Midwest Book Award for Children's Fiction, and Bjorn's Gift (released in 2016).

In Mari's Hope, set in a small village in occupied western Norway in the final years of World War II, young Mari has become a valued helper to the village doctor. She also plays a role in her family's efforts in the local resistance, despite many dangers, especially from the snooping soldier called Goatman and from Leif, her one-time school friend, now a German collaborator.

As the German war efforts falter, the pressure increases on the occupying troops to hold Norway firmly in their grip. But freedom-loving Norwegians will do their best to thwart those plans.

Praise for the series: "An exciting look at the occupation of Norway, through the eyes of a young, brave girl." – Angela Cerrito, author of The Safest Lie

Readers familiar with the first two books in the series will enjoy seeing Mari blossom and grow into greater confidence in herself, as she and her family, friends, and neighbors stubbornly hold onto hopes that the war will end and peace will return to their beloved country. New readers will enjoy this story on its own merits, and can look forward to catching up with the beginnings of Mari's tale in Odin's Promise and Bjorn's Gift.

The series is ideal for dog lovers, for Norwegian Americans and other European-Americans whose ancestors were involved in resistance movements in World War II, and for all who enjoy reading stories about World War II history.

Winner of 2014 Midwest Book Award for Children's Fiction, Odin's Promise is a middle-grade historical novel, a story of the first year of German occupation of Norway as seen through the eyes of a young girl. Eleven-year-old Mari grew up tucked under the wings of her parents, grandma, and older siblings. But when Hitler's troops invade Norway in Spring 1940 in the early days of World War II, she is forced to outgrow her "little girl" nickname to deal with harsh new realities in her small village. At her side is Odin, her faithful Norwegian elkhound. Mari, her family, and her neighbors are soon drawn into the activities of the underground resistance movement, as young and old find a way to oppose the occupying forces and show their love for their native land. The year will bring many challenges, as Mari confronts danger, develops her inner strength, and finds she is able to endure hardship and heartache. Readers will cheer for Mari as she discovers her inner strength – and the courage to help celebrate Norway's spirit of resistance." – Kathleen Ernst, author of the Caroline Abbott series from American Girl. "Not since Marie McSwigan's Snow Treasure have I read such a book about the heroic roles children played in the resistance movement in Norway during WWII." – Carole Estby Dagg, author of The Year We Were Famous.

Bjorn's Gift is a sequel to Odin's Promise, winner of the 2014 Midwest Book Award for Children's Fiction. Set in Norway during World War II, Bjorn's Gift continues the exciting adventures of Mari, the young Norwegian girl who faces growing hardships and dangers in her small village in a western fjord. German occupation troops and local Nazi supporters move closer to her family's daily life, and her classmate Leif becomes active in the Norwegian Nazi youth party. Mari struggles to live up to her brother Bjorn's faith in her, as she becomes more involved in risky resistance activities, trusting only her family and a few close friends.  Across Norway, oppressive laws are imposed in the months from late 1941 to early 1943, with dire local consequences. Still, difficult decisions force Mari to admit that many things in life are not easily sorted into good or bad, and she begins to wonder if Hitler will ever be defeated and whether the occupation of Norway will ever end.  Praise for Odin's Promise: "Readers will cheer for Mari as she discovers her inner strength – and the courage to help celebrate Norway's spirit of resistance." – Kathleen Ernst, author of the Caroline Abbott series from American Girl.  "A seldom-seen slice of daily life during WWII." – ALA Booklist.  Author Sandy Brehl is a teacher and an active member of the Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators.
