1
It’s 1912 and on-board the Titanic are two women from very different walks of life. Alice Higgins is an impoverished music hall performer, heavily pregnant and running away with her bounder boyfriend to start a new life in America. Nesta Villiers is the wealthy wife of a brutal man, and is escaping to New York to avoid him committing her to an asylum. When the ship begins to sink, Nesta offers to take the baby Alice gave birth to on-board, onto a lifeboat – promising to return him when they are rescued. But in a case of mistaken identity Nesta thinks Alice has died and claims the baby as her own. But even when they reach New York and she discovers her ‘son’s’ mother is alive and well, she continues to tell people he is hers. In an epic tale that starts with the sinking of the world’s most famous ship, and ends with the Second World War, Alice and Nesta contend with the heartbreak the First World War brings; the emancipation of women; the realisation of their dreams, and the strain of keeping so many secrets. When fate brings them together again, a life-long battle ensues as they fight to hold onto the boy they both adore.
- The Exciting Life
2
The sequel to Never Forget and the start of a whole new saga..... It’s 1959 and Annie and Kenneth Holland, the brother and sister adopted by Nesta Villiers at the start of World War II have grown up into very different people. At just 25 Annie is a widow, after Mario, her racing driver husband committed suicide, leaving her in crippling debt. Her only asset is Bruno’s, the West End nightclub Mario won off a gangster. Kenneth is now the head of Tanner Beresford, Nesta’s housing association, while Nesta recovers from a stroke in a Swiss clinic. Brother and sister are at each other’s throat, with the pious Kenneth condemning Annie for her frivolous lifestyle; and when their aunt, the world-famous actress Alicia Bloom, gives Annie a run down hotel for her birthday present, and she decides to open it as an emporium selling her luxury shoes and bags, Kenneth cannot forgive her for not donating it to Tanner Beresford. Into their lives enters the mysterious Iris Lindholm, a beautiful former high-class hooker who knows a lot about the brother and sister and is determined to make her mark. When Iris and Annie both fall in love with Patrick Collins, the handsome gangster’s son, all hell breaks loose and allegiances are formed that will last a lifetime and span the generations to come.
- The Lucky Ones
It’s 1978 and cousins Ellie Grantham and Viva Collins are eighteen years old. A sheltered schoolgirl, Ellie has lived in the protection of Annie Holland, her mother as well as her father and stepfather. She longs to escape the confines of boarding school, and when she meets a handsome punk rocker, she gets her chance to finally start living. Viva Collins lives in the glamour of LA with her parents and younger sister. Dating a womanising politician’s son, and taken for granted by her mother, Iris, Viva longs to return to England to seek out Mark, her younger brother, who was left behind by Iris when she escaped to the US. After blackmailing Patrick, her father, Viva makes her escape and arrives in London. Soon she is thrust into the world of fashion, and all the temptations it brings. Soon, it’s the 1980s and these two independent girls are making their mark. For Ellie, what starts as a second-hand record shop turns into a burgeoning record label. A disastrous, short-lived marriage means Viva cannot work as a model again, so she becomes a journalist and has no intention of returning to America - despite Iris threatening to disown her. The cousins put aside their mothers’ rivalry and become close friends and allies.....for now. Along with their success comes heartache. Ellie finds life as a rock star’s wife difficult – can she ever trust him? And Viva lurches from one disastrous relationship to another, while the man she truly wants is married to another. As these two girls turn into young women, their lives change as quickly as the society they live in. This is Thatcher’s Britain and the ethos is to make as much money as possible, with little regard for those you trample on as you make your way. Ellie and Viva intend to do whatever it takes to get to the top and there are bound to be broken hearts, shattered dreams, and some relationships will never be the same again.
