About this series
Problems and Solutions in Structural Geology and Tectonics, Volume 5, in the series Developments in Structural Geology and Tectonics, presents students, researchers and practitioners with an all-new set of problems and solutions that structural geologists and tectonics researchers commonly face. Topics covered include ductile deformation (such as strain analyses), brittle deformation (such as rock fracturing), brittle-ductile deformation, collisional and shortening tectonics, thrust-related exercises, rift and extensional tectonics, strike slip tectonics, and cross-section balancing exercises. The book provides a how-to guide for students of structural geology and geologists working in the oil, gas and mining industries.
- Provides practical solutions to industry-related issues, such as well bore stability
- Allows for self-study and includes background information and explanation of research and industry jargon
- Includes full color diagrams to explain 3D issues

- Map Interpretation for Structural Geologists
1
Map Interpretation for Structural Geologists covers various topics, from deciphering topography using contour patterns to interpreting folds, faults, unconformities and dykes. By interpreting several types of maps, this book gives readers the confidence to solve difficult geologic questions related to map interpretation in the classroom and in the field. Interpreting geological and structural maps is an inseparable part of learning structural geology in the undergraduate curriculum and postgraduate development. Features approximately 30 full-color geological or structural maps and their solutions, from basic to the most complex Includes content appropriate for undergraduate and graduate students and professional geoscientists alike Presents a self-learning guide and teaching manual with minimum instruction required
- The Omega-Theory: A New Physics of Earthquakes
2
The Omega-Theory: A New Physics of Earthquakes, Second Edition offers a unifying, mathematical framework to describe and answer the most pressing and unexamined dilemmas of earthquake sequences. Those in the fields of seismology and geology are currently faced with a vast and complex mathematical structure, involving many new, natural laws and theorems. This book interprets this structure as a new physical theory and paradigm, helping users understand the tectonic and seismic processes within the Earth. As such, it is an essential resource for future researchers in the fields of structural geology, physics of the Earth, and seismology. In the last decades, generations of seismologists, geophysicists, and geologists have accumulated enough knowledge and information to allow for the reformulation and solution of this essential problem. Hence, this book provides a great resource for researchers and professionals. Brings together twenty years of research in the field of geophysics and attacks the problem within the framework of the Cosserat continuum theory Heavily tested on tens of natural examples and numerical tests Includes 350 color figures and graphs Spans across many fields of theoretical physics and geology, such as plate tectonics, synchronization of chaotic systems, solitons and fractals, mathematical set theory, and quantum mechanics
- Tectonic and Structural Framework of the Zagros Fold-Thrust Belt
3
The latest volume in the Developments in Structural Geology and Tectonics series from Elsevier, Tectonic and Structural Framework of the Zagros Fold–Thrust Belt is a collection of the most up-to date research and developments in the unique tectonic and structural geology of the Zagros. The Zagros fold–thrust belt is famous among geologists and is one of the most-studied terrains in the world. Because of its unique structures, the Zagros orogeny is challenging for many researchers and experts; this book is the essential reference that collates the newest data and fully explores that aspect. In addition, because the Zagros range is a potential source for hydrocarbons, it is of interest to petroleum geologists and exploration companies worldwide. This book is an essential, cutting-edge reference for oil companies, structural geologists, and students at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Includes valuable new data about one of the most famous collisional mountain ranges in the world, the Zagros fold–thrust belts, as a guide for other collisional ranges such as the Himalaya, the Alps, and the Andes, as they share common fundamental deformation mechanisms Provides research from geologists across the world, with the goal of understanding the unique dynamics and kinematics of the Zagros range
- Tectonic Setting and Gondwana Basin Architecture in the Indian Shield
4
Tectonic Setting and Gondwana Basin Architecture in the Indian Shield, Volume Four, is the newest book in the Problems and Solutions in Structural Geology and Tectonics series from Elsevier, and is a synthesized monograph on the tectonic settings of Gondwana basins of India. It is a unique book on a topic of national and international interest, especially given the economic importance of the region (coal reserves). The book is authored and edited by very experienced theoretical experts and explores and reconstructs unified stratigraphic research of the region, including the relative role of tension and lateral movement in basin formation. Basin formation is the driving force behind formation and break-up of supercontinents and the time frame of supercontinent cycles. Provides the latest data on the tectonic settings of Gondwana basins of India Explores the unified stratigraphic research of the region Authored and edited by experienced theoretical experts
