About this series
This is volume six of an ongoing series of short instructional and informational eBooks on Martial Arts. Obviously, the best way to learn (almost anything) is from an experienced and competent instructor, however I hope these books will ‘fill in some blanks’ or give you ‘food for thought’.
As has been often said - ‘The best form of defense is a good offense’. This eBook is going to explore that topic. We are going to look at strategies, tactics and combat moves. The strategies will apply to everyone no matter what martial art(s) you study. The tactics may or may not apply to your art(s) but I hope that many will. Also, hopefully, the combat moves that I am going to explain will be sufficiently generic that they are either in the art(s) you study or can be added quite simply.

- Martial Musings: The Ten Things That Martial Artists Need To Know
2
The Ten Things That Martial Artists Need to Know Whatever martial art (or arts) that you study or teach there are many things that are important but here are some of the things that are particularly important... These ten things range from the purely philosophical (possibly almost spiritual - depending on your definition of that term) that will help you to be more, through to the purely pragmatic tips that will help you to do more (in your preferred martial art or arts).
- Martial Musings: 32 Types of Exercise for Martial Artists
4
This eBook does NOT contain a list of different specific exercises or details on how to perform exercises. This is something a little more audacious, this is a list of different types of exercise and why, as a martial artist, they can benefit you. A martial artist’s performance will be improved if they supplement their normal martial arts training with appropriate exercise. You want to be as strong, as flexible, as coordinated, as fast and (insert other attributes) as you can be. Obviously there are limitations, your genetic makeup and the amount of available time you have to exercise, being the main two. If you are not learning martial arts for anything other than self defence then you may feel that you should NOT need to be fit. It is completely true that effective self defence should work irrespective of your physical attributes. However, the fitter you are the better, and that’s irrespective of your reasons for learning martial arts. As I tell my students “You are far more likely to be mugged by the ‘flu bug’ than you are by the big ugly guy who lives around the corner!”. Also if you are in a physical confrontation and you get injured, your fitness and health levels will have an effect (a positive one I hope) on your speed of recovery. Finally (and I appreciate this is not possible for everyone) if you are fit enough to be able to run away from trouble (“Run, Forrest, run!!!”) that can be a very useful self defence skill too.
- Martial Musings: In Defence Of Self
5
This eBook is going to discuss Self Defence. It's not filled with 'DEADLY', 'SECRET', 'MILITARY' stuff that's too dangerous for normal people to learn... No it's filled with something much more important, the mental skills, attitudes and knowledge that you need to have, so that the physical skills that you have learned at a martial arts school will really work!!! Now everyone knows that the self defence that is taught in the martial art that they study, is simply the best there is. But that leads us to a problem because not every martial art can really be the ‘best’ form of self defence, as there are so many different ones. Maybe then the self defence skills taught to martial artists are the best for the individual martial artist, given the art they study and their own specific skills... Well again that is problematic because the tale of the ‘black belt’ martial artist who gets beaten up by some ‘street fighter’ is pretty ubiquitous. So could it possibly be that many martial arts teach sub-standard self defence skills? Well yes that is absolutely true BUT there is way more to the failings of self defence than that. You see the main problem with why you may not be able to defend yourself adequately.... is you !!! I’m going to list some common problems that stop martial artists being as effective as they might otherwise be and I’m going to look at what you can do about it, if you feel that any of the problems could be something that you (or the people you teach) might suffer from...
