Description
The Devil Went Down to Georgia by The Charlie Daniels Band is iconic. But did you know it was written about a real-life, Famous Fiddler, from the 1920's? In a rare interview, Charlie Daniels revealed he was inspired by the 1925 poem The Mountain Whippoorwill. The poet of The Mountain Whippoorwill had read a news article in a local paper gawking over a young man who came down from the poverty-stricken mountains of Georgia and blown away all the patrons at a fiddling contest at the local fair. He continued to compete, and continued to beat the best fiddlers in America with absolutely zero training and zero lessons! His name? Lowe Stokes. Lowe Stokes went on to be one of the best fiddlers in history, peaking around the 1920's and 1930's. In this Roots Music History Documentary, we dig into the Roots behind the song The Devil Went Down to Georgia and the forgotten life of Lowe Stokes.
