Description

The suburbs haven’t got a great press recently on KEEN ON. First there was Benjamin Herold, author of Disillusioned, who found the dead body of the American Dream in the American suburb. And then David Masciotra, author of Exurbia Now, discovered political lethargy and reaction in the outer suburbs of American “exurbia”. Matt Hern, however, disagrees, finding in the suburbs the very political energy and engagement that he believes have been lost from the gentrified inner cities of London, Vancouver and San Francisco. Indeed, Hern, a Canadian urban activist and author of the new Outside the Outside, believes that the “sub-urbs” are the very vibrant places of political resistance and regeneration that can offer a positive model for progressive critics of neo-liberal urbanism. Matt Hern lives in Richmond, BC on xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) territory.  He is the co-founder and co-director of Solid State Community Industries and has led many other community projects.  He teaches with multiple universities, continues to lecture globally and his books and articles have been translated into nineteen languages.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Andrew lives in San Francisco, is married to Cassandra Knight, Google's VP of Litigation & Discovery, and has two grown children. This is a public episode.
