Description
Liz Johnson Artur is a Ghanaian-Russian photographer. Born in Bulgaria, raised in Germany and based in London. Liz photographs life as she sees it, from street level. Her loving take on Black life is a celebration of the everyday person when they put themselves together and step out; be that at church, carnival or in the club. Liz’s long career documenting Black life now forms part of her ever evolving Black Balloon archive. Alongside her essential work documenting the lives of the African Diaspora, she has also photographed the likes of Lady Gaga, Jorja Smith, Shygirl, Lee Scratch Perry, and Ms Carrie Stacks. In this episode of Sounds & Style, Liz and Lynette discuss Liz’s habit for meeting her musical idols including Don Cherry and KRS-One, as well as the similarities between her career and that of musician and muse, Asha Puthli, both of whom had their creative potential awoke on formative visits to New York City.
