On today's show, Chris Manning and Evan Dammarell discuss what the Cavaliers can do to maximize Jarrett Allen's potential with the team by emulating the Atlanta Hawks and Utah Jazz. They also go on to discuss what other changes they'd make to help Allen succeed all while talking about how much they'd pay the Cleveland big man.
Jarrett Allen will be a restricted free agent this summer. Some reports out there say he could make as much as $125 million over five years. Chris and Evan think Allen should get a four-year, $88 to $90 million extension.
The only scenario where Cleveland shouldn't extend Allen and instead trade him is if they end up with the second-overall pick in the NBA Draft, take USC big man Evan Mobley, and view Mobley more as a center than a four.
When you look at teams like the Atlanta Hawks and Utah Jazz, you can easily see that Clint Capela and Rudy Gobert are the defensive anchors of their respective teams. The Cavs should do the same with Allen, who will in turn make everyone's lives easier on defense.
A lot of this comes down to coaching as well. J.B. Bickerstaff, a defensive-minded coach, needs to embrace this and design his scheme in order to maximize Allen's potential.
It also comes to Cleveland's personnel decisions, too. When Darius Garland was out, Allen wasn't a consistent part of the team's rotation. That's why the Cavaliers need to go after someone like T.J. McConnell in order to address that need.
