Description
In this episode, I am having a fantastic conversation with Steve Hooker, a street photographer out of the United Kingdom.
Steve would like to think he has been a street photographer for the last seven years, except that would not be true. The signs were there from his late teens when he received his first film SLR camera.
Steve disliked family and friends posing or smiling when he pointed the camera at them. Steve liked to capture them going about their daily business and pretend his was not there. The film director Francis Coppola said it best in his brief cameo in "Apocalypse Now" as a director. He shouted at the Marines: "Don’t look at the camera, don’t look at the camera. Just go by like your fighting."
By the late 1980s, Steve started to photograph London’s workers on a small Russian film camera he still wished he had.
The lack of confidence kept Steve and his camera off the streets however he did see street photography images that he did not take. Not sure where that confidence came from decades later; maybe age, maybe the desire to record contemporary daily history eventually overtook Steve and he went on a photographic journey.
Nowadays Steve NEVER leaves the house without his camera. When its needed, the camera is always available!
Steve's philosophy is best encapsulated by this quote by the actor Steve McQueen,
"Everything before and after, is just waiting."
