Good morning and happy Monday! Last week, Tracy Chapman became the first Black artist to win Song of the Year at the annual Country Music Awards. Her song, "Fast Car," was released thirty-five years ago, but gained popularity over the past year after it was covered by white male country artist Luke Combs. For them, writer Abby Monteil noted that "Fast Car" is an iconic working-class and lesbian anthem. But recognition for non-white male singers in country, folk and other forms of Americana music is scarce. This reminded me of today's newsletter, which was originally published a year ago.
