Description
Dr. Corinne Devin joins us on the podcast this week to share her experiences in Girl Scouts earning her Gold Award and providing a sense of community to her and her mom as part of a military family. She also provides tips, suggestions, and strategies for troops who might be interested taking older girls overseas for entertainment or volunteer trips abroad.
Dr. Devin's country recommendations:
Peru (moderate weather; Machu Picchu- one of the seven wonders of the world; primary ingredients in food are bananas, eggs, and chicken)
Japan (good volunteer opportunities to interact with kids and help with relief efforts; safety)
Italy, Spain, Portugal (lots to see and do, relatively economical so money goes further)
Germany, Austria, Switzerland (very safe, but more expensive)
Guatemala (lots of volunteering opportunities)
Dr. Devin's suggestions for service opportunities for high school girls internationally:
Teaching English
Teaching Shapes & Colors
Teaching Body Parts
Songs, Arts and Crafts, Games, Sports (interact with kids)
Cooking
Research about wildlife/animals
Although we have no experience with these organizations and collaborating with them as Girl Scouts for international travel or sponsorship (so therefore we cannot endorse them or speak from experience), here are links to the organizations that Dr. Devin references in this episode or recommended to us after the episode (for travel, sponsorship, or volunteering):
US Department of State Smart Traveler Enrollment Program - a free service to allow U.S. citizens and nationals traveling and living abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
Cross Cultural Solutions
Junior League - opportunities to seek sponsorship as long as you are seeking specific expenses/experiences to be donated not straight monetary donations, also Dr. Devin recommended to use organizations for volunteering abroad sponsored by Junior League because they are vetted; you can search specific chapter locations on this website to find a chapter near you
4Ocean - promotes clean oceans in Malta; removes plastic waste from the ocean; sells bracelets
Arbor Day Foundation - partner with people in any city or state in the USA
Nature Conservancy - volunteer in your area or search by location to look at travel volunteering opportunities
Sierra Club - many ways to take action and/or volunteer to support the environment either locally or abroad
Onegreenplanet.org - 7 Awesome Hands-on Ways to Volunteer to Help the Environment
Volunteer World
The Greatness Foundation - scroll down to see volunteer opportunities and retreat opportunities internationally
International Volunteer HQ
Volunteer Match - can search for opportunities by location
